Breaking down on a motorway is one of the most stressful experiences a UK driver can face. Whether you’re on the M1, M6, or any other major road, the high speeds and heavy traffic make it genuinely dangerous if you don’t act quickly and correctly.
At Awan Recovery MK, we respond to motorway breakdowns across Milton Keynes and the surrounding area every single day. Here is exactly what you should do — step by step.
Step 1: Get to the Left Lane Immediately
The moment you notice something is wrong — an unusual noise, warning light, loss of power, or flat tyre — signal left and move to the hard shoulder or the nearest emergency refuge area as quickly and safely as possible.
Do not stop in a live lane. Even a few seconds of hesitation in a moving lane can be fatal.
If your car completely cuts out without warning, put your hazard lights on instantly and try to coast to the left as far as possible.
Step 2: Turn Your Hazard Lights On
As soon as you pull over, switch your hazard lights on. This is the first thing other drivers will see, especially in low visibility conditions like fog, rain, or at night.
If you have a high-visibility vest in your car, put it on before you open the door.
Step 3: Get Everyone Out of the Car — and Away From It
This is the step most people get wrong. Many drivers stay inside their vehicle thinking it’s safer. It is not.
Get all passengers out of the car immediately. Exit through the left-hand doors only and move behind the crash barrier or as far from the carriageway as possible.
Motorway vehicles travel at up to 70mph. A car stationary on the hard shoulder can be struck without warning. Distance from the road is your best protection.
Leave pets inside the car if possible, or keep them on a lead close to the barrier.
Step 4: Call for Help from a Safe Position
Once you are away from the vehicle and behind the barrier, call for recovery assistance.
- If it’s a smart motorway with no hard shoulder, you must reach an emergency refuge area before calling. Use the orange SOS phones located every 500 metres, or call 999 if you are in immediate danger.
- For standard breakdowns, call your recovery provider or a local recovery company directly.
📞 In Milton Keynes or surrounding areas? Call Awan Recovery MK on 07944 644 447 — we’re available 24/7 and respond fast to motorway callouts across MK, Northampton, Bedford, and Luton.
Tell the operator:
- Your exact location (junction numbers, mile markers, or what3words)
- The make, model, and colour of your vehicle
- The nature of the problem
- How many people are with you
Step 5: Wait Safely — Away From the Crash Barrier Side
While waiting for recovery, stand on the embankment side of the barrier — not between the barrier and the road. If there is no barrier, move as far up the bank or verge as possible.
Do not stand behind your vehicle. Do not attempt to repair the car yourself on a motorway. Do not re-enter the vehicle unless directed by police or a recovery technician.
Step 6: Make Your Vehicle Visible
If you have them, place a warning triangle at least 45 metres behind your vehicle — but only if it is safe to do so and you are not on a motorway. Warning triangles are not recommended on motorways due to the danger of walking on the hard shoulder.
Instead, keep your hazard lights running throughout.
Step 7: Follow Instructions From Highways England or Recovery Services
Highways England traffic officers patrol UK motorways 24 hours a day. If an officer stops to assist you, follow their instructions — they are there to keep you and other drivers safe.
When your recovery team arrives, let them manage the vehicle. A professional recovery operator will have the right equipment to move your car safely without causing further damage.
Smart Motorway Warning: Extra Precaution Required
Smart motorways (like sections of the M1 near Milton Keynes) do not always have a permanent hard shoulder. If you break down in a live lane on a smart motorway:
- Turn on your hazard lights immediately
- If you can move, get to the nearest refuge area (marked with a blue SOS sign)
- If you cannot move, stay in your car with your seatbelt on and call 999
The system will detect your stationary vehicle and close the lane using overhead signals, but you must still alert emergency services.
Be Prepared Before You Drive
The best way to handle a motorway breakdown is to reduce the risk of one happening in the first place. Before any long journey:
- Check your tyre pressure and tread depth
- Check your engine oil and coolant levels
- Ensure your fuel tank is at least a quarter full
- Keep a basic emergency kit in your boot: hi-vis vest, torch, jump leads, and a first aid kit
